Job Description

 

The Graduate Engineer will work within the Engineering Team (ET ) which is predominately office based but the work will extend to sites as, and when this is required.

The prime function of the ET is, initially, to provide assistance to the work-winning team, identifying any technical/non-compliance issues, value-engineering opportunities and any other engineering biased points which the estimating team may not reasonably be able to foresee.

As a member of this team, the work will extend into the Construction process, helping with any technical/engineering issues that arise and providing solutions–this will be done by `removing` the problem from the site and allowing it to be considered properly and the resolution returned to the project in a timely manner.

The Graduate will be expected to complete tasks that they are given, proportionate to the experience which they have and with a strong emphasis on mentoring / tutelage to allow them to make the transition from Academia to Operations.

This will include spells within other areas of the business to assist in making a fully rounded Engineer; one with an understanding of commercial, planning and contractual elements which are an equally important of the Industry and do cross relate.

 

Accountabilities

 

SHE Management

  • Take part in both internal and external training opportunities and be responsible for developing an understanding of Health and Safety, it`s importance in the industry and the legal responsibilities that go with this. It is expected that this will be achieved within the first 6-12 months.
  • Assist in developing and implementing safety plans and procedures, Risk assessments and Method statements and Designer RA`s.
  • Assist in carrying out safety audits and inspections, report writing and identify opportunities for improvement to safety practices and procedures.
  • Learn to develop an understanding of what a safe and healthy work environment should look like and help to foster a culture of safety within the project team and across the organization.
  • Develop an understanding of our CDM obligations, that these are addressed and contribute to the `Designing for Safety` principles.

Design/BIM Management

  • Prepared to assist in carrying out feasibility studies, evaluate project requirements, and develop design concepts / solutions to ensure technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness of proposed solutions.
  • Ensure that projects comply with contract specification, drawings, designs and current regulations & standards and be able to identify any non-conformities.
  • Add to any Value Engineering required for projects and help in implementing these through to completion as needed.
  • Develop an understanding that drawings and the design process have on project programme, to Assist in ensuring that all aspects of the project are approved and signed off via drawing approvals and technical submittals as required in the project contract documents.
  • Attend monthly Design and BIM progress meetings

Documentation and Communication

  • Be able to work on technical reports, project documentation, and other written materials, and present findings to project stakeholders, including senior management, clients, and regulatory bodies. These include Technical Submittals, drawings, sketches, and design reports.

Project Management

  • Assist in the production of programmes
  • Learn to be able to interact with the Construction Teams, develop an understanding for materials and installation processes.
  • Assist in evaluating that packages under the control of the project engineer are compliant with the Design brief/drawings/schedules and the cost plan and help to ensure these are procured and managed in accordance with the project plan
  • Assist in implementing `off site` manufacturing strategies as required in conjunction with the DfMA Team at JAB`s POD and other centres.
  • Assist in coordinating with other engineering teams, designers, subcontractors, and others to ensure that project requirements are met, including providing technical guidance, reviewing work, and resolving technical issues as needed.
  • Learn to manage / identify change management
  • Set and monitor project targets and standards.
  • Input into focus and steering groups/ Workshops as required.

Commercial

  • Develop an understanding of all the commercial aspects of the project(s) or packages of work under the Project Engineer’s control—and in particular for change / variation identification.
  • Aid in recording and responding to internal and external correspondence.
  • Help to monitor / identify project risks and develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to ensure that project objectives are achieved and are fully understood

Quality Assurance

  • Participate in project reviews and other quality assurance activities and ensure that all project work is completed to the required standard as set out in current legislation and within the contract documents. o Input into the creation of the Project Quality Plan.
  • Implement QAQC hold points for the Project(s) or Package(s) of work under the Project Engineer’s control.
  • Implement Inspection and Test Plans for the Project(s) or Package(s) of work under the Project Engineer’s control.
  • Assist in ensuring that project work complies with applicable regulatory standards and best practices, and identify opportunities for process improvement.

Client Management

  • Able to attend meetings as required on the project to maintain exemplary communication with the Client Team including Consultants and Contractors.

Professional Development

  • As and when required be involved in work winning activities.
  •  Stay up to date with the latest industry developments and participate in professional development activities to maintain and improve knowledge and skills.
  • Consider CPD activities within the industry and personal professional improvement.

 

Communication and Influencing

 

The role will report into the Operations Director / Senior Project Engineer but will also interface with the wider project team / structure within JAB and be able to develop good working relationships in all areas.

The Graduate Engineer will help with the engagement and liaison with the client and members of the professional team.

All methods of communications are to be utilised but will typically be verbal and written communications face to face in meetings, via Teams, by means of reports and via email.

 

Financial Responsibility

 

The Graduate Engineer will have no financial responsibility for either the successful delivery of the project or Packages of Work within the project. They will be expected, however, to help in the financial planning , cost control and opportunity identification and be able, in the long run, to develop these skills to the point where they could accept appropriate levels of responsibility.

 

People Responsibility

 

Be able to help in the development of their `Peers` but also of other members of staff when required / able, particularly as, as a recent graduate, their knowledge of recent innovations/practices may well be more relevant.

 

Specific SHEQ Accountabilities

 

Responsible, in conjunction with other members of the project team, for compliance with all aspects of Health, Safety and Environmental policies and legislation. This will only apply once the Graduate has reached a reasonable level of competence, and qualification.

Relevant experience as needed for the role.

  • It is acknowledged that as a Graduate, whilst an understanding of design should be full, the understanding of commercial, pre-construction, construction and commissioning and handover activities within building services are likely to be more limited but should be the aim to acquire.

Qualifications

Appropriate level of Engineering based qualifications include

  • C&G or NVQ to level 3
  • HNC/HND/Degree in Engineering Services
  • A-Levels / GCSE`s
  • Relevant experience as needed for the role.

Further Relevant Information

 

The Graduate Engineer will be predominantly office-based but will be expected to visit / spend time on projects so a degree of flexibility in this respect will be required. The projects are predominately within the London area but this may not always be the case.

The Graduate Engineer will have to carry out any other reasonable duties commensurate with the level of the role and their experience not defined within the job description.
